Our first read aloud...

I love to start out each school year by reading The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo.  This is such a meaningful story about a china rabbit named Edward who learns to love others.  In the beginning of the story Edward is an arrogant, selfish character, but through a series of owners and situations, he learns that he can trust other people with his heart.  We only have two chapters left.  Hopefully, we'll find out how it ends tomorrow!

Tomorrow is library day!

We go to the library on Fridays.  Don't forget those books!

Recess Fun!

We are loving the great weather this week!

Book Orders

Scholastic Book Orders went home a few weeks ago.  I need all orders back by this Friday, September 23rd.  Please remember to make checks payable to Scholastic.  Scholastic offers great books at a reasonable price.  I encourage you to take advantage of this to help build your child's home library.

Picture Day!

Don't foget tomorrow is picture day!  Order forms went home in Friday Folders last week.

Read to Someone

One of our "Daily 5" each day is "Read to Someone."  During this time students share books with a partner.  This is to help build fluency by reading aloud and to help foster of love of reading by sharing favorite stories with a friend.  During this time, students also work on using reading strategies together, sometimes coaching each other in decoding new words or reading more fluently.  As I'm sure you can imagine, read to someone is one of our favorite rounds!  Ask your child to tell you about the stories they've shared with friends during "read to someone."

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

A huge thank you to all of our "Rocket Math Moms!"  I'm so thankful to have so many parent volunteers this year.  I appreciate your help, and your kids love seeing you at school!

Happy Friday!

Please take a close look at the information in your child's Friday Folder this weekend.  Since we're not having a curriculum night this year, you'll find a parent information packet with all the information you and your child will need for a successful second grade year.  There's also a permission slip for posting photos to this blog.  I'd like to keep the blog updated with pictures, videos, and student work samples to keep you informed about our daily activities.  Of course, I will only post pictures of your child with your permission.  Please sign and return the permission slip to school on Monday.

A great week!

We've worked so hard to get into a routine this week!  I'm so proud of the effort from everyone!  I feel like I'm constantly saying, "Move a little faster, let's go!" and everytime they pick it up and move a little faster.  I'm sure all the kiddos have been coming home exhausted.  Soon we'll be running like a well-oiled machine, and that's when the true learning happens!

Family Info

The Family Information sheets are coming home in Friday Folders today.  Please look over the information on the pink sheet and make any necessary changes.  I need the completed sheet back to school on Tuesday. Everything else in the packet is for your information and may stay at home.  Thanks so much!

Off to a great start!

Our first week has been absolutely fantastic!  This group is going to be such a fun class!  I'm impressed with how quickly everyone has adapted to our schedule, and we've worked so hard to learn our Daily 5 rounds this week.  Next week we'll begin our reading, writing, and intervention groups.  We have so much to learn in second grade - can't wait to get rolling!
