Happy Spring Break!

I hope you're enjoying this extra time with your precious child!  Hopefully, we'll get warmer spring-like weather soon!  Remember to keep reading!

Reading Idea

This year's spring musical is a fairy tale extravaganza! If you're looking for ideas for your next at-home read to share with your child, try fairy tales. We began reading and discussing The Three Little Pigs in class today, and it was fun to see how excited my "almost-third-graders" got every time that wolf huffed and puffed!

Square Art

This year's Square Art orders are due Wednesday, March 27th. You can place the order online, or you can send your check and order form to school with your child.

Music Money

Please remember to send in $3 for your child's spring musical costume. As always, it's sure to be a terrific show. The kids are going to be adorable bakers!

What are you reading?

As you know, reading at home is more than just homework. The more time children spend reading with someone they love, the more they will love reading. As the school year winds down and we prepare for summer, please be thinking about what you can do to keep your child reading over the summer. (I'll be posting more about this in the next few weeks.)
I would love to know what books you've read and enjoyed with your child this year. Do you have any books you think other students and parents would enjoy? Please comment with your book suggestions and feelings about how reading at home has gone for you and your child this year. I'd love to hear your ideas!

Lights! Camera! Learning!

We learned three challenging new words today - transparent, translucent, and opaque. I've been impressed with how well the kids have done with such an abstract concept as light. We've learned that light is made of colors, and we see those colors as a rainbow when a prism bends light. Tricky, tricky science this week!

Snow Day!

I hope all my friends are enjoying this wonderful snow day!  With no school tomorrow, this extra time off is just what we needed.  Hopefully, we can all get plenty of rest this weekend and come back to school without so many sniffles and sore throats!  Enjoy this extra time, and don't forget to read, read, read!

Menu Change, Feb. 19

Tomorrow's lunch menu will be switched with Wednesday's. We're having meatballs with sauce tomorrow and taco salad on Wednesday.

You read to me, I'll read to you!

We did something new with our published writing last week. To build fluency and take on an authentic role as authors, we recorded ourselves reading our work aloud. Those recordings are linked to QR codes. Stop by sometime and listen to my fabulous second grade authors present their work! You can use any free QR code reader app on your smart phone, or you can borrow an iPod from the classroom.

States of Matter

This week we did a little experiment to see if we could make matter change state. We've learned all about solids, liquids, and gases. On Wednesday we took an ordinary liquid and changed it to a delicious solid just by shaking!

The Quilt Story

One of my favorite stories in our reading series is The Quilt Story by Tony Johnston. It's always so much fun to snuggle under warm quilts while we share books. The clouds and cool temperatures have helped make it even more comforting this week! (Next week's story is about the life cycle of pumpkins. Somehow pumpkins are not as much fun in January.)

Don't try this at home!

We spent some of our reading group time this week working on identifying the plot of a story. We also learned that dry erase markers are a lot of fun on our reading table! (I sincerely hope you don't end up with any marker on your furniture at home!)
